"NewFoundDance Presents: Sweet and Salty
Choreography by Mariève Aubé, Robyn Breen, Emma Kerson, Stéfanie Théroux

The Scotiaback Studio Theatre at The Pia Bouman School
6 Noble Street, Toronto, ON

For a full press release keep reading!
This July, NewFoundDance presents it’s fourth Canadian dance production, “Sweet and Salty”. After two summers of pleasing audiences in St. John’s, NL, NFD relocated temporarily to Toronto, ON, producing “Alert! Electric Popsicle Field” last June. “Sweet and Salty” is sure to be the most flavourful show yet, with new works by aspiring and talented choreographers Mariève Aubé, Robyn Breen, Emma Kerson and Stéfanie Théroux.
Mariève Aubé is a recent graduate of the York University BFA Dance program hailing from Timmins, Ontario. Throughout her work, "9 of Rivers", three dancers embark on a symbolic journey towards discovery. The build of intensity creates a powerful physical struggle. The piece features Robyn Breen, Rachel Martin and Stéfanie Théroux.
Also a York grad, and current School of Toronto Dance Theatre student, Robyn Breen, born and raised in St. John’s, NL, is the founder of NewFoundDance. Her new solo created for Andrew Hartley, “brain”, takes a peek into imaginations past. What did we do then, that we would never do now?
Emma Kerson presents a piece inspired by the painting “Shit Picnic” by Neil Kelly. In creating her solo, she drew from personal memories, discarded everyday moments, and found comfort in allowing these lost items a voice. Emma is a recent graduate from The School of Toronto Dance Theatre, and was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
From Ottawa, ON, Stéfanie Théroux is another recent grad of the York dance program. Her new creation “Anna” tells the story of a woman's beauty through someone else's eyes and is inspired by Irving Layton's poem "I Take My Anna Everywhere". It features Mariève Aubé, Robyn Breen, and Tracy Day.
“Sweet and Salty” features technical design by Ethan Millard and stage management by Norah Murphy. Poster and logo design by Haris Mahmood.
Don’t miss your opportunity to see young Canadian artists in action!
Hope to see you at the show!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NOVEMBER 4, 2010
NEW ART SHOW EXPLORES WHO WE ARE AS A PEOPLE
In Our Blood, is the second photo exhibit this year by St. John's artist John Rao, exploring imagery and landscape of Newfoundland.
His most recent work, The Apostles, hung this past August also at The Masonic Temple. Recently, he co-directed Alice in Wonderland with Terri Andrews of Tada Events! and was seen in last season’s Republic of Doyle (2009), has created photography and design for a long list of local and national clients. Rao describes In Our Blood as new work “inspired by the land and sea that has given us so much and defines who we are as a people.”
“I remember when I lived in Ontario as a kid hearing so many family members longing to see the ocean while we were surrounded by what I considered home – the steel and concrete that makes up so much of urban “mainland” life. It wasn’t until we returned to Newfoundland and many years had passed that I realized how lucky I was to be able to walk or drive to breathe the clean air and bask in the beauty of the ocean.”
On the surface a complete departure from his last show (The Apostles) about his feelings on religion and its role in our lives, John sees these landscapes as a similar pursuit for truth. “There is something pure about simply trying to represent the land, the air, the sky, that so much other representational work, for me, does not possess. You are limited only by your frame and the weather of the moment.”
This purity that John speaks of is evident in a few pieces in particular: the title piece “In Our Blood” a depiction of the ocean approaching the shore as one wave makes its way to crash into the cliffs. Another, is a “portrait” of Tablelands. With no interruption of human hand, only earth and sky, the mountains inhabit the photo with an indomitable spirit.
John is particularly influenced by British visual artists the Pre-Raphaelites whose work was driven by the desire to capture pure detail and intense vibrant colors similar to Italian and Flemish work. William Holman Hunt’s “The Scapegoat” (1856) was of particular influence on “Tablelands – Here”.
In Our Blood is hanging until from November 13th-21st at the Masonic Temple. An opening reception will be held on November 14th at 2pm and is open to the public. Special music performance by Coco Leung. The artist will be present.
Visit www.newfoundlandlandscapes.com for a special preview of “In Our Blood” on the gallery page. All work will be available for purchase through the Masonic Temple.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND
Exciting new adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s classic blends aerial artistry with digital animation.
This October, Tada! Events and creative partners, AOR Presents, Acro-Adix and Campia Gymnastics, present one of the most innovative theatrical productions to hit the St. John’s stage.
Alice in Wonderland is a visual feast, combining the aerial arts (trapeze and silk acts), dance, theatre, and for the first time in a local theatrical show, gymnastics.
The script, developed especially for this production, follows Alice, caught in a psychedelic world where she encounters amazing creatures under the ground and in the air.
“There is tremendous acting and dancing in this show, it is going to be awesome!” says director, Terri Andrews. “With over 400 coming out to our auditions, we were able to pick the best of the best performers in their fields.”
Co-creator, John Rao agrees: “We have some of the Province’s highest ranking gymnasts in this show and over the summer have been training on the silks and trapeze alongside the professional aerialists of Acro-Adix. Its been incredible seeing the results.”
Alice in Wonderland is the first show of its kind to be conceived in this province. With gorgeous costumes, exciting animations and continuous action, audiences of all ages will be enthralled.
If you can only see one show this fall, make it Alice in Wonderland.
